PHYSICAL EDUCATION  Mr. Treffner/Mrs. Pienaar

Dalhousie prides itself on offering a quality Physical Education program where kindergarten students receive 90 minutes of activity per 6-day cycle and grade 1-6 students receive 150 minutes of activity per cycle. We have received the prestigious Quality Daily Physical Education national award for the last 3 years and the provincial T.O.B.A. Award (To Benefit All) for the last 2 years.

The Goals of the K-3 Program are as follows:
  1. To promote an active, healthy lifestyle and develop physical well-being through a variety of activities.
  2. To develop fundamental movements and skills needed to function in everyday life.
  3. To develop coordination, self-control, cooperation, and sharing with others through individual and partner/group activities.
  4. To develop physically, cognitively, and emotionally through a variety of exploration and awareness (space and body) activities.
  5. To develop the ability to move safely in the gymnasium/play area and to follow directions.
The Goals of the Gr. 4-6 Program Include:

  1. To develop physical well-being through a variety of activities (i.e. to promote fitness).
  2. To develop the ability to use the basic movements and skills of everyday life (i.e. walking, run.
  3. To develop and improve oneself (trying new skills, practicing old skills)
  4. To develop self-control, cooperation, and sharing with others through individual and partner/group activities.
  5. To improve upon the ability to listen, follow directions, think and move safely, etc.

Evaluation:
Students will be evaluated on their sport skills, pacing, game strategies as well as their participation in class, attitude in class, and on how well they follow directions, cooperate with others, make improvements, etc.
The four fitness components of fitness are cardiovascular strength (1600m), flexibility (sit and reach), muscular strength, and muscular endurance, sit ups, and push ups) are tested each term but are not included as part of the assessed grade/percentage. They are recorded on a card and each student aims to improve upon their own personal level of achievement in each of these areas.

*All yr. 4-6 students must change into gym clothes for each Phys. Ed. class for their own safety and freedom of movement.
Intramurals:
Dalhousie has intramurals offered throughout the school year for all students in Grades 2-6. These take place at 12:25 daily.
At various times during the year, students in Grades 4-6 have opportunities to participate on school teams representing Dalhousie and competing against other schools within the Division.
Information on the intramural schedule and interscholastic activities is posted in the monthly school newsletter.
